Department of Social Development Director-General Vacancy 2026

The Department of Social Development (DSD) has announced an exciting senior leadership opportunity for experienced professionals in the public sector. Applications are now open for the position of Director-General: Social Development, offered on a five-year fixed-term contract at the department’s head office in Pretoria.

Salary Package

The successful candidate will receive a competitive all-inclusive remuneration package of R2 352 642 per annum, plus a 10% non-pensionable Head of Department allowance.
The package includes a basic salary, the state’s contribution to the Government Employees Pension Fund, and a flexible portion structured in accordance with applicable regulations.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • A postgraduate qualification (NQF Level 8) recognised by SAQA in:

    • Public Administration

    • Social Sciences

    • Public Management

  • At least 10 years’ experience at a senior managerial level

  • Extensive knowledge of:

    • The Constitution of South Africa

    • Public Service legislative framework and regulations

    • PFMA and Treasury Regulations

    • Social assistance legislation, policies, and frameworks

    • National Development Plan (NDP)

    • POPIA and PAIA

    • Corporate governance (King IV Report)

Key Competencies and Attributes

The ideal candidate must demonstrate:

  • Strategic capability and leadership

  • Financial and change management skills

  • Programme and project management expertise

  • Strong people management and empowerment abilities

  • Executive decision-making and negotiation skills

  • Ethical leadership and accountability

  • Ability to drive innovation and organisational transformation

Key Responsibilities

The Director-General will be responsible for:

  • Providing strategic leadership in implementing the department’s constitutional and legislative mandate

  • Ensuring effective and efficient management and administration of the department

  • Strengthening intergovernmental and stakeholder relations

  • Supporting the Executive Authority with oversight of public entities and regulatory bodies

  • Acting as the main communication link between the Executive Authority and the department
