The Gauteng Department of Environment has officially opened applications for its 2026–2028 Internship Programme, offering unemployed South African graduates an opportunity to gain practical workplace experience in various environmental and administrative fields.
The programme is aimed at graduates who hold a completed National Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, or Honours Degree in relevant disciplines. Successful applicants will be appointed on a non-renewable 24-month internship contract and will receive a monthly stipend of R8 174.75.

Most internship placements will be based at the department’s Head Office in Johannesburg, while the Environmental Policy, Planning & Coordination internship will be located in Pretoria at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

Internship Duties
According to the department, successful interns will receive structured workplace exposure and practical training relevant to their academic qualifications. Interns will also participate in projects, workplace activities, and skills development initiatives under the supervision of experienced professionals.

Important Conditions
The internship programme is open to unemployed South African graduates who have not previously participated in a Public Service internship programme. The qualifications must also be obtained from accredited institutions of higher learning.
The department added that preference may be given to candidates whose appointment will improve representativity in terms of race, gender, and disability.
