National Department of Health is Hiring

The South African National Department of Health has announced a high-level executive vacancy for the position of Deputy Director-General (DDG): National Health Insurance (NHI), based in Pretoria. The opportunity is aimed at experienced senior managers with extensive expertise in health economics, public health, and health policy leadership.

Key Leadership Opportunity in South Africa’s Healthcare Sector

The DDG: National Health Insurance role is one of the department’s most strategic leadership positions, focusing on the implementation and oversight of South Africa’s National Health Insurance system. The successful candidate will play a central role in advancing universal health coverage and improving equitable access to quality healthcare services nationwide.

The position offers an all-inclusive remuneration package of R1.8 million per annum and forms part of the department’s senior management echelon.

Main Responsibilities

According to the Department of Health, the appointed executive will provide strategic leadership and policy direction for the implementation of the National Health Insurance programme.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Leading the rollout and coordination of the National Health Insurance system
  • Overseeing healthcare benefits and provider payment systems
  • Managing digital health information systems linked to the NHI Fund
  • Coordinating procurement functions for health-related products
  • Developing anti-fraud and anti-corruption strategies within the NHI environment
  • Ensuring improved health financing and healthcare outcomes for citizens

The department is seeking a candidate capable of driving healthcare transformation while maintaining accountability, transparency, and operational efficiency.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • A Grade 12 certificate
  • An NQF Level 8 qualification in Health, Medical Sciences, Public Health, or Health Economics recognised by SAQA
  • At least eight years of senior management experience in health economics, health sciences, or health management
  • Extensive knowledge of health insurance policy development, monitoring, and evaluation
  • Strong understanding of South Africa’s healthcare challenges and the National Health Insurance framework

Additional requirements include excellent communication skills, computer literacy, a valid driver’s license, and the ability to work under pressure and travel frequently.
